With the assistance of the Chestnuthill Township Historical Society, we recently uncovered fascinating details about the origins of Brookmont. What began as a simple farm in 1947 has since transformed into a trusted senior care community that continues to serve residents with dedication and compassion.
In 1947, Gene and Helen Bilodeau left the fast-paced life of Brooklyn, NY, for the quiet countryside of Effort, Pennsylvania. They purchased a farm without electricity or running water, relying on a wood-burning stove for cooking. While they did own a cow at one point, the Bilodeaus chose not to pursue farming. Instead, they began renting rooms to visitors from the city who sought a peaceful retreat in the Pocono Mountains.
By 1964, Brookmont had become a well-known year-round getaway that could accommodate up to 50 guests. The property featured an outdoor swimming pool, a recreation room, and modernized lodging, offering a perfect escape for those looking to enjoy nature and relaxation.
As the need for skilled nursing care grew, the Bilodeaus saw an opportunity to evolve Brookmont’s mission. On July 18, 1973, Brookmont received its official state license to operate as a nursing home, marking the beginning of a new chapter. The facility expanded to 43 beds and quickly reached full capacity, welcoming residents from both the local area and out-of-state.
A half-million-dollar investment allowed Brookmont to offer full-time professional nursing care, specialized therapy services, and a home-like atmosphere. Over the years, the facility has continued to modernize, ensuring that each resident receives personalized and compassionate care.
